Medicine Lake in Smoke

I had an opportunity to spend a couple of days in Jasper/Banff this past week and was hesitant at first to take a run out to Medicine Lake. I decided that I should go and all along the road to the lake I'm looking out the window and the brown haze in the air. Forest fires in British Columbia are burning and the natural jet stream is pulling this smoke into Alberta and on thru the country. I believe the smoke has made its way to the east coast at this point. I took almost 200 images at the lake and had to check about every third or fourth shot to make sure my camera was ok. I would take a shot of a pine tree close to me to make sure it was the right colour. On this particular image all I did was add a little sharpening and a slight saturation adjustment. The colour that you see is the colour in the atmosphere at the time. It was as amazing as it was sureal to say the least.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by for a look.

As always your thoughts and comments are welcome and appreciated.

Nice work to use the haze to your advantage. I also like the addition of the rock in the lake just to break it up. The overall muted tones are great. Good work Mark.

Beautiful golden tone to this and lovely water. Like the comp, would just like to see a little more room in front of the FG rock. :toast:

For me, the rock is annoying (but fg rocks are almost always annoying to me). But the rest of the shot is stunning--great atmosphere! I like a 50/50 spilt--without the rock.

The soft tones are beautiful. I like everything about this but the foreground rock. Perhaps toning down the highlights on the rock would not make it stick out so much.

I like the color and the rock in the foreground is a nice anchor point.
Thanks for sharing.

Eerie and a little unsettling in that one can pick up that it's not what it probably should look like. Which puts the senses on alert, I think. Really like the comp and I also think you used the haze to your advantage.

Very strong image IMO. Lovely composition and the sepia like tone thruout is very appealing.

The yellow haze makes for and interesting take on the place. The water ripples, though, are my favorite part.

Very nice picture you made, Mark. Besides being esthetically appealing, it captures so well the muted "smoky" light that existed during these days of forest fires to the West. We drove from Banff to Lake Louise on the 21th (day after) and I have pictures with a similar light (though less marked) from the area around Mt. Kerkeslin. The fg/bg split works for me, as do the ripples and the underwater rocks. The fg rock anchors the perspective well, though I agree with the comments re toning down its highlight. Great work.
