The Peak

Shot at Bateau Bay as a storm rolled in. This was during the day so I had the Mono conversion in mind already. I was initially attracted to the shape of the rock as the main subject but the differing colorations and textures in the surrounding rocks I thought made for good support throughout the image, topped of with the cloud formations above.

Nikon D700, 16-35mm, f11, 1/200, ISO400
BW conversion, levels and curves + TK luminosity masks, some selective pp on the sky

Andrew,

Great shapes and geometry; I think the b&w helps emphasize those features quite well. And the sky, wow, looks like a stand alone image in there somewhere... But you've struck a nice balance between these rocks and the sky - giving the rocks the emphasis, which is what you were trying to accomplish.

No nits and I can't see anything that needs improving. Nice work with this one.

For a photo that emphasizes the foreground to such an extent that it has become nearly abstract and dominated by the interplay of tones and shapes, there is a lot of sky. It's not bad, but it's unusual, and sometimes when things are unusual, they have to really work in order not to leave people unsettled.

Thanks Lon and Daniel.

Kent thats an interesting comment and I certainly appreciate the point of view. Incidentally I think a crop works OK to reduce the amount of sky also but not sure it addresses where you're coming from. Thanks again and I'll keep this in mind for next time.

I love the subject matter, but i find the tones/lighting very confusing. It appears the light is behind the lhs cliffs, but there also seems to be direct lighting on the backside of the cliffs--which seems impossible. It could be due to some sort of blend or selective work on the curves here--since there seems to be a slight halo around the rocks against the sky. Personally, id take a good hard look at the RAW and try to rework this, since the subject is terrific.

Stan, thanks for the crit. I agree that the sun looks like its coming from behind the cliff and its probably due to the cloud being much lighter in that section of the frame. The sun was almost directly overhead at this point. I suspect that the selective curves that I've applied to the sky has exacerbated this to the point that it appears as you have described.

I did notice the halo and have spent some amount of time trying to reduce it but struggle to get rid of it totally. I'll go back to the raw and have another crack at it. Thanks again.

I just love these B&W images on my laptop. The shapes and textures look incredible here. This is what B&W are all about, IMO.

Love the largest center triangular stone pointing into the image and the sky. Lots of interest for me in this image Andrew. I do agree that the rim lighting looks a little odd and will be interested in seeing your repost. Excellent conversion as posted though for my tastes.
