Monsoon Flood
by Joel Hazelton
Heavy monsoon rains definitely did Grand Falls justice this year. This weekend was by far the most water I've ever seen flowing over this waterfall... Probably close to 3,000 cfs.

yeah, the composition is great here and beautiful colours : ) Great work...Well done!!
One of the best I've seen from here, Joel. Love how you framed the left edge with the rock outcrop. There appears to be a water drop (or some distracting element) near the far edge of the falls that could stand to be 'healed'.
Did you use the USGS flow charts to deduce this event, read the recent flash flood warnings or just roll the dice?

John- I watched the charts. At one point last week it looked to be up in the 5000-6000 range. Pretty ridiculous.
Congrats

Nice lower angle you took getting down the cliff a ways. The sunset light reflects well off the muddy water and mist to give your shot a nice tone. Nicely done! I was out there last night (Sunday eve) and noticed that the water was like a dark chocolate, rather than the milk chocolate of spring. The muddy mist must really be airborne at a 6k flow.
Great light, lovely mood, and beautiful layering.
Sweet light and I love the way the water flows through the image on a nice diagonal comp! Love all the soft light play and mood to this great image!
Mother nature at her best. Fantastic image, love everything about this. Definitely is a keeper. I can see this in AZ highways, double page layout. Great work!
When this first popped up, my first reaction was Michael Anderson. That should tell your right there that this is one fantastic image. The light on the falls, the sky and even down to the dark contrast of the rock framing the left edge. A wonderful and incredible capture.

@John Lehmkuhl- It is actually quite an ugly waterfall... During mid-day it's a disgusting combination of brown and gray. But, in the evening when the mist catches light and the plunge pool reflects the sky, it can take on a pretty sweet ethereal quality.
