Short-eared Owl
by Ron Dudley
Another in my owl series from Red Rock Lakes NWR, Montana. This is the same male as in my post on 6/27 but this shot was taken the day before. Here he was coming in for a landing on a sagebrush in front of him (but just out of frame) before transferring the vole to his beak for delivery to the female and young.
I found it interesting that in the 8-10 times I photographed him with a different vole in his talons, without exception he always carried it in his left talon. There's a thin piece of debris caught in the talon with the vole.
7D, 1/1250, f/5.6, ISO 800, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, shot from pickup window on 6/25/10, cropped to 47% of original image, banished two tiny grass tips coming into the side of the frame, sharpened bird and vole, NR to background, no other processing or adjustments, natural but low light, not baited

I love the intensity in it's eyes!!
And very interesting--a left-footed owl! You've got me intrigued--I wonder if anyone has ever done studies on "handed-ness" in birds. Great observation. I'm going to try to look it up and will let you know if I find anything.
This is a superb shot! You captured this very nicely.

All I can say is the proverbial "Wow" Ron.
The only room for improvement would be less of a crop..
Wish it was mine
The symmetric composition works very well.

The centered comp you used works perfectly for my tastes. That head on look, the raised wings and the dangling vole draw me right in to the image. Love the soft light (though it was difficult to photograph in), the dried grasses in the foreground and how the background still retains a sense of place.
An excellent image as posted.
