Cheryl:
Mantises are difficult to capture but you have done well here. Like the pose with the slightly upturned head and slightly outstretched arms ready to box. The curving antennae provide leading lines to the eyes. Beautiful backlighting as well.

I love the backlighting here Cheryl. Also great focus on where it counts on, not always easy on insects. Do you find the live view an advantage when shooting smaller subjects? Being able to enlarge an area on a subject by 5X and 10X is a great option with the 7D. Especailly with macro. Well done.

Yeah, I knew exactly what it was doing. What a great opportunity to throw a curve into a bunch of straight lines. I think the right half of the frame only would be more powerful.

Pete, I played with the crop for forever and just couldn't figure it out. I didn't want to cut off the antennae but the left half was bugging me as well. Im stumped

Yep, he's cool! :)
Love that curled antennae kissing its nose/mouth, with the focus right where it needs to be.
Great BG, and the low key works for me :toast:

Cheryl,
I AM suggesting cropping the antenna on the left. Why not? It is out of focus anyhow. I think the right half of this frame would make a very engaging photograph.
