I had found this heron perched in a small inlet the previous evening and returned to find it there the next morning. Given that it is a location quite close to a popular fishing spot, the heron is obviously approachable.

As he was now sidelit with the rising sun, I used a touch of fill flash to bring out some of the feather detail. This is almost a full frame shot with little cropping.

Details:

D300 w/ 500mm ED-IF P
1/320ths at F/7.1 (-0.3EV) ISO 200 equi.

David,

I like the pose, the effect of the sidelight, eye contact, setting and comp. To my eye it the bird appears to have a slight green cast, most likely picked up from the surrounding leaves, I would attempt to minimize that. Your choice of dof worked very nicely for this image.

Hi David. Very pretty setting, particularly the maple leaves on the perch. Might try toning down a few hot spots on the leaves and the side of the neck. A larger view would help to critique. Thanks for posting a species I always like to see.

Very neat pose and look in the eye of this one, David. I like the lighting and it looks perfectly positioned in the frame to my eye. :toast:

I like this a lot David, an interesting pose and I like the way the sidelighting works in this shot. I agree with Gary on trying to tone down a few of the highlights a little bit. :toast:
