I was notified yesterday that my little Bee Fly flyer image is a semi-finalist in the Windland Smith Rice International Awards for 2010..Yippee! :)
I shot this on a clear sunny day late fall last year.
Ground level in a prone position and hand-held, no flash @ 10 fps.
The small ground cover perennials are Oxalis Wildflowers.
75% of the original frame. Canon 1D M3, Sigma 150mm, F/6.3, 1/1300th, ISO 800.

Great action shot. I like the detail in the bee and what ever the hell that mast is sticking out of its face. Looks like the bee is getting ready for pole vaulting. Also, beautiful capture and placement of the Oxalis within the frame. Congratulations Howard on your award :toast:

Jamie, that mast thing is called a proboscis BTW :)
Thank you for the congrats, but I'm up against some stiff competition of course.
I could say it's just nice to be recognized even at this level, in any case..
But then I'd be lying ;-)
Brings me back to my H.S. football days when the coach taught us that winning wasn't everything..
It's the only thing

Kudos for getting this shot! I've tried it, so know how tough it can be just to catch them. And you have a great setting for it!

Howard,
Another perfect flight shot! You lined it up perfectly to put the Bombyliid against the plain green background, and get it in FOCUS, all with a colorful and well-balanced composition. Your honors are well-deserved.

Looks like some congratulations are in order here! CONGRATULATIONS on both wins. What an awesomw shot. You know I tagged it as yours before I even pulled it up. The sharpness of the bee works so well with the movement of the wings

WOW Howard! Stunning capture of the bee in flight. I love seeing the flight position of its legs and how it seems to be using its back extremities as rudders. Super capture! Congrats on the EP! :toast:
