Pearl Crescent Butterfly

Yesterday I visited a former farm field that I am working on a management plan for. I was hoping for a plethora of dragonflies and butterflies but it's a little early in the season and I wasn't going to venture to the wetland area for fear of having all of my blood sucked by the mosquitoes. As I was leaving this Pearl Crescent caught my eye hanging out on a milkweed plant.

Nikon D300s 300 f4 + 1.7X TC HH
f/8
1/1000s
ISO 640

Cropped to 70%, sharpened, noise reduction, cloned a few flare spots.

Nice capture of this BF and well exposed in this harsh lighting. The DOF is just perfect in getting both antennae in focus and just enough to make out the red ladybird bug in the BG. Well done.

I love how Crescents keep their wings open (like this) almost all the time. Nice capture!

Nice. A. syriaca is such a cool plant. Hope you also got some shots of the Tetraopes in the background.

This week the pearl crescents are everywhere. Tough lighting, but I like the detail in the butterfly and the inclusion of his beetle friend in the background :toast:

Luke,
Now that's a sharp shot! Also a nice environmental shot of how popular the milkweed plants are with other insctects, such as the milkweed beetle.
