Matching focal length to shutter speed I use 250th at 250mm this morning. With ISO on auto the ISO was 3200 with aperture 5.6. Hand held, no cropping, 10a.m. Slight tweek in Topaz Adjust - Smooth & Flat.

I think you could improve this by cropping some from the left so the cardinal was not centered and some of the OOF foreground on the left was removed. That would also make the Cardinal larger in the frame. Keep posting.

George,

I sure miss seeing cardinals where I live in Utah. I have always found their colors, perkiness and calls appealing.

I hope you will take my critique in the spirit in which it is given which is to share information. If you are not shooting in aperture priority I would suggest using it, I'd also turn off auto ISO and manually set that yourself. Then you can select the aperture and adjust it or the ISO to get the shutter speed that is needed. Looking at the lack of detail in the bird's plumage and the downed tree the bird is on would indicate to me that the ISO was too high here. Another thing is overcompression, the size of this image on the server is only 84.7 kb, overcompression reduces visible detail, posting close to the 200 kb limit for the smaller version is a good practice.

iThe image posted is only 650 pixels on the widest side but even this small it appears there is a lack of sharpness. I'm not sure what gear you are using, the focal length or the weight of your set up, but it might also help if this had been tripod mounted for stabilty.
