Blood Moon Rising

Ambient sunset light glows on the hoodoos, spires, and pinnacles in Bryce Canyon UT while an incredibly orangish-yellow full moon rises in the opposite direction.

Thanks to my fiancee I was fortunate enough to grab this capture; I was actually facing the other direction when she told me about the moon rising. I am not sure what the area is to the left of the moon - I think it is either a dark cloud or an optical illusion created by the moon rising over the horizion. Any thoughts? Whatever it is...it doesn't really bother me - I am just kind of curious as to what it could be. It was in all my shots of this scene, but not in anything else.

Large version is enclosed for your enjoyment.

Not sure what you are refering to beside the moon. It looks like a very faint hill in the far distance maybe? But this shot is incredible. I have not seen a lot of shots of Bryce that really got me to take notice. But this one for sure does. You have at least two of my five or so favorite shots from here!

Wonderful image, Michael. The rising moon adds a wonderful touch here and makes this iconic scene somewhat unique. Well done!

Lovely layers, colors and mood, Mike. Overall it feels very film-like which is a good thing.

Wow the overall exposure is perfect, also retaining detail in the moon. What a lovely orange glow. Nice work Michael!

Michael,

The lighting is amazing here. Very rich. I think I might have panned up a bit to include a bit more sky or zoomed out a bit. The just feels a bit cramped to me.

Just lovely, Michael. Looks like your engaged to the right lady. She has a good eye.

I think it is either a dark cloud or an optical illusion created by the moon rising over the horizion. Any thoughts?

Yes, it's Navajo Mountain, I'm guessing 50-80 miles away. It's a prominent landmark from a huge area of the Colorado Plateau and it's shape is quite distinctive.

Great luminosity from the sunset light. Beautiful color and processing in this one. Is the dark area a distant mountain? Never mind, TK got it.

Beautiful shot. Definitely stands out from most reddish daytime Bryce shots. How long was the exposure on this? I'm curious because I had heard that anything over 6 seconds can make the moon a bit blurry.

Michael,

Fabulous image from Bryce. The moonrise is wonderful, as is the light and glow in the canyon. The only complaint I have really, which is minor, is the trail/road at the bottom. Too late to move, but really it's more of a "I wish it weren't there" but reality kinda thing we can't do much about.

Gorgeous color, light and timing of the rising moon. Congrats!
