Broad-winged chicks

Much to my surprise I discovered these chicks in a nest right across the road from my house. I had noticed the female had been flying around the back yard recently and so I followed her around to the front of the house and she took me right to her nest. The nest is about 50 ft high and I was about 30 meters from the tree. I took the image last Monday, and although the chicks are not flying I have no idea just how old they are. If someone has an answer/guess to age I'd appreciate a note in your comments. I'll note that I also used an extension tube (12mm) for the first time in hopes of bringing the subjects closer.

Thanks for taking a look.

You did a good job on the POV. It doesn't have that "looking way up" feel to it.

There are some real experts on raptors here that could give a much better guess on age.

Excellent job getting both of them in sharp focus, Chuck. Wonderful clear eyes and catchlights. It doesn't really look like you were shooting up at much of an angle. :toast:

Nicely done!! Great job on getting both of them in focus, and it's a great little setting, with the oak leaves.

Great find and setting overall, and I like the way they seem to be lazily watching that strange creature with a funny box in its hands  Excellent!

A tough shot to get with the surrounding branches but good detail and sharpness on the birds, wonderful find, well done.

You've got a nice clean view of this nest Chuck, your image looks very good to me. From that distance I'm not sure how much your extension tube will help. :toast:

Neat image Chuck. Sharpness looks good and you got a nice look at both eyes and good separation of the birds and against mostly blue sky. DOF looks just about right. Did you get any images of them with all those positive characteristics with a little more space between the beak of the chick on the left and the tree trunk?
