I guessed correctly which post this Common Nighthawk would land on :). I pre-focused on the post as the bird swooped and then came in to land. Cropped to vertical.

Fine photo! IMHO a very good action photo of a bird normally out in low light situations. The top of the left wing is a bit dark, but not much could be done about that. Brings back memories of hearing nighthawks in the evening as they hunted. Thanks very much for posting.

Wow, what an unusual shot! I have only very rarely seen one of these guys on a perch much less landing on one. One could wish the bird had been coming slightly toward the viewer rather than away but I'd be ecstatic to have captured this.

Nice capture Rob. Good anticipation and execution as the nighthawk landed. I like this.

Neat capture Rob - I'll bet this one took some work on your part. Don't think I've ever seen a photo of this species landing or taking off. I like this a lot for its uniqueness and I'm glad you didn't rotate for the post.

Can't believe this only has 5 comments... it's hard enough to find these birds during the day light but to get one in flight is just awesome and you did a fantastic job of it.

Thanks everybody. This was taken at 7:43 pm, on a beautiful evening. I too wish I was more to the front, but I'll take this one anyways :). Ron, I can almost guarantee that the post is crooked and actually leans the direction it is in this photo.

Rob,
I would be thrilled to have this in my files, it is great. Love that landing pose, the light, details and sharpness. I'm also glad you didn't rotate the post with the age and character evident in the post I believe that the angle of it adds to that aged look.

Killer shot! I look forward to seeing Nighthawks every year and usually only manage a few brief sightings. I have never seen one land. This is a major WOW photo for me. Well done!

Wonderful timing on getting this difficult shot. I have tired to get a photograph of a lesser nighthawk but no success as yet, well done.
