fishing in the shadow
emboldened by stan's comment on another posting - zigzag in man & nature - i am posting this (which also put that rather abstract post into context!). in maputo bay, at the mouth of the matola river, lies the most polluting factory in mozambique. a touch downstream - but still in the tidal zone, people from the slum areas of the city place these traps for fish. this is a testament to the extents that people must go to scrape out a living. this is taken in the evening - a couple of days before the other post - when i first visited the location. the sky is a complex mix of falling light, smog, dust and smoke. yuk!
this also, interestingly, illustrates quite clearly how these traps work. the fish move into the area through the gap (see above the nearest set of zigzags) and, as the tide ebbs out, they get trapped in the circular areas at the end of the vee. ingenious!
thanks for looking.
