John:
Looks like you are having fun with the extension tubes. I have also bought a set recently and was playing with them on the rainy Saturday. With this set up, assuming that you at minimum focusing distance, it should give you a magnification of about 1.15x. The silky background here is great. I am not an expert on flora abstract but the ones I have seen seem to only have one sharp focal point rather than several. May be if you shift the POV slightly to just concentrate on the far right filament and throw the rest OOF, it may be keep the eyes from wandering. Just a suggestion. Anyway its a great start and hope to see more.

John, Some good suggestions already  . I suggest that you experiment with 50mm F/1.8 lens with the 36mm Tubes as well. 50mm lets you go real close to the Lily (or any subject) and hence provides perspectives that you will never see with the 100mm Macro Lens.

I have had some good success with daylilies using the 50mm and ET combination. The only thing is that you are better off hand holding that combination.
