Ice Storm Pony

The winter of 2010 brought some absolutely frigid weather to Middle Tennessee and the South. On January 29, 2010, the Nashville area was hit with a sudden ice storm with accumulations of several inches of snow and ice with single-digit temps. I found this poor horse in a field along with several other horses. He was the only one covered in ice.

Thankfully, just after I took the picture, the owner came out to the field and brought all of the horses back to the barn.

Great shot. It's the ice on its ears that gets me. Gives me goose bumps. Then again, that's the shaggiest horse I have ever seen, so hopefully he wasn't as cold as he looks.

Really nice image. I think the iceing on the cake would have been if you could have gotten a bit of "smoke" coming from its mouth.

NPN posting guidelines which are found in the drop down menu at the top of this page provides guidance for choosing the appropriate gallery for image posting. I hope you don't mind, but domestic animals are designated as part of "Man and Nature," so I will see if I can successfully move this over.

I do quite like the frost on his coat, the layered foreground to background and the sense of cold!

I like all the ice both on the pony and the ground. He looks in good hair coat so was probably ok. If it rains first so that they are wet to the skin and then freezes it is hard on them.

Beautiful image. The ice on the pony seems to give a lonely feel to the solitary figure.

Poor thing. I'm cold just looking at him. Nice capture, though
