Smell the flowers

This is a grizzly in British Columbia that took the time to smell the tree in the middle of a light rain. It was definitely worth marking the spot for her and gave me a good chance to get the image.

Nikon D300, Iso 500 -2/3EV, 70-200 at f2.8 at 175 1/1000 second

Ooops - it was 2010

I like the rain, adds a lot of interest to the photo (and probably made getting the shot a LOT tougher). You were sure close, in fact the hind end is a little bit close to the frame edge. Nice simple composition. The larger view isn't too much larger, can't tell if the eye is visible, that would be nice.

I can get the eye in Lightroom but I am not sure how to repost the picture here. Yes, it was close but there are a bunch more shots that are within 10 feet. It was pretty cool - if you have never done the Great Bear Rainforest north of Prince Rupert, you should go! The environment and the bears are great. Thanks Gary for the comments.

I have never seen a Grizzly. The whole experience of being this close has to be incredible. I like the rain and the mood, I wish the larger image had been posted at the full 1200 size, I'm sure its delightful.

Hi Lindy, I like the mood in the image created by the rain and the muted light. The exposure is spot on as, is the sharpness. Also interesting from a behavioral POV. Compositionally I wish you had included a bit more room on the left to give her some space.

FYI: Unfortunately it is not possible to repost a large image, only a repost 720px image can be posted with a comment to your own image.

Nice as posted. That said, I am wishing you had pulled back a little, not only to leave more space on the tail side, but to accentuate the upward stretch toward the top of that little tree. The exposure looks fine and I trust that in a larger edition eye detail is evident.

Hi Lindy,

It's always fun up in the Khutzeymateen to watch the bears do their thing right in front of you, eh? Overall a nice behavioural shot. From a compositional perspective I agree with the suggestion of including a little more space on the left. Actually, I think an overall shift of the camera to the left (moving both the tree and the bear to the right a little) would work here - that would have given the bear a little more room behind it and positioned the tree closer to the edge of the frame (which, I think, would have balanced the composition slightly better). But nice to look at exactly as posted!

Cheers...thanks for sharing this - looking forward to seeing more!
