Kalalau Valley
by Jason Kim
My wife and I spent last week on Kauai, and I had hoped to bring home a nice photograph of the Na Pali Coast. We did an ocean kayak trip and later hiked the Kalalau Trail, but the weather and light didn't cooperate on those long, exhausting days. Wonderful experiences both, but not ideal conditions for photography.
Somewhat disappointed, I decided to head up Waimea Canyon Drive to check out this popular lookout, the day before we left. I arrived a couple of hours before sunset and the valley was, of course, thick with clouds. As the afternoon wore on, the clouds began to thin and subtle hints of a blue ocean and lush cliffs began to poke out from behind their hazy curtain.
I'm sure glad I stayed, because the light that evening was very special, and I got the photograph I had envisioned in my mind. Thanks for looking.
