Life at the Edge

This shot was taken at sunset in a remote part of São Jorge island (Ponta dos Rosais) - Azores and show many seagulls flying at end of the island.

The image was made by combining two exposures one for the birds which allowed me a fast enough shutter speed and another one for the rest of the scene.

Canon 5D2, Canon 17-40, 0.9NDG

Love the lichen foreground, the leading line, wonderful sky, and the circling gulls are a nice touch.

What a view! The gulls add a wonderful sense of scale to the image, and add some interest in the sky/water space. I would tone down the orange on the horizon a little.

Wonderful perspective to this and I like the layered look from land to sea to sky, well done.

That comp gives me vertigo. You have conveyed the steepness and expanse beautifully!

Absolutely beautiful, Rui. I can just imagine standing there. I love those seagulls and the touch of sunlight in the background. My only nit would be to open the highlights up a little more - I feel that the reflection of the sun is too muted. Otherwise stunning!

Rui,

Although the seagulls are a bit small throughout, they do add an important element making for a good nature story. I really like the lichens and touch of green. I'm a little puzzled by the horizon as I can't really tell where the horizon is. Is that a cloud bank or fog? Is the sun reflecting off the surface? It also seems so much softer up there, but again, because of clouds and fog? Or maybe it's a depth of field thing. I'm not sure, but the softness of the background isn't sitting with me for some reason.

Really like this. The sun's reflection in the ocean makes it feel like it's shining up through the water. I'd be inclined to crop the clouds and let this illusion become more dominant.

I love the depth in this shot. The seagulls give a sense of scale and the lighting is excellent.

Sweet perspective, and I also enjoy the mirage-like horizon.
