This image was taken at Oceano Dunes located in Oceano, California near Pismo Beach. It was taken with my Canon 20D and converted in Photoshop CS4 to monochrome.

Oh! This is a great scene. I really like the monochrome, especially the darkness of the sky. The sepia is perfect for the dunes, but my preference would be to tone it down a bit, at least in the clouds. But that's just a matter of taste. Terrific picture.

I like what you've done here as well but agree with Buck re: toning down the sepia effect just a tad. Interesting how the tracks in the immediate FG disappear once they reach the top of the dune.

I really like the scene's contrast an toning. Not sure about the matching frame/mat. Seems a plainer presentation would emphasize the image more.

Thanks to all for the feedback. I would love to find a resource that presents the proper technique for colors when it comes to matting and frame choices. I'm never sure as to what colors to select or the degree of darkness.

The monochrome emphasized the contours and textures very nicely. Excellent conversion.

This inspires me to try B&W. I like the shapes, formations, and lines.

I like your processing a lot here. And the light. Very well "written with light" Ken!

Ken,

This is an outstanding image from the coastal dunes. I used to check them out back in my college days at Cal Poly. Great b&w conversion and I really like the toning here, including the deep sky. gives this the look of a old film shot with a heavy red filter.

The immediate dunes are fascinating by themselves, almost like it's some inverted depression or something. And the tiny footprints are great.

Excellent overall image and presentation. Can't help you with the color matching. Personally, I concluded a while back that simple is best. Either a simple, single, neutral frame or no framing at all (at least online anyway.) For framing and matting prints, I also used to agonize of picking inner and outer mats, trying to pick up colors, etc. A big hassle and in the end the varied matting I began collected didn't match anything, so again I just went to simple double white matts and solved that problem. Just a couple thoughts.

Hi Lon,

Thanks for the feedback on this image. I will have to work through the "framing and matting issue and also believe that simple is the order of the day. I used to post without them but thought I'd do some with just for a change.
