All Hail

I managed to fire off a few photos from work the other day of this growing supercell thunderstorm east of Colorado Springs. This is looking north from Pueblo at the storm illuminated by the setting sun. It went on to drop lots of hail on the towns and grasslands to the east. Its not often i get any photos from work--so i thought it was worth sharing!

One of the most impressive cloudscapes I have seen! Pays (literally in this case, I'm sure) to have your camera with you at all times. I'ld be inclined to clone out that one contrail.

Cool shot, Stan.
Reminds me of my midwestern childhood.
How high were the cloud tops?

At work with your head in the clouds, hu…? Me too.

The contrast and light are pretty.

Neil, i cant recall how high, but im sure at least 40,000 feet. Tops are generally lower here than out over the plains. There is an 'overshooting top' (updraft punching clouds into the stratosphere) here which shows up on the top right portion of the anvil since its lit by the sun. That's usually a sign of a strong storm.

Stan,

Out of all the things in nature, I have been most fascinated with clouds for what seems like my entire life. If there are clouds present, I'll go out in the back yard just to look, marvel and wonder.

Every moment like this with clouds will never, ever be repeated and so be glad you got this one frozen in time.

Awesome and powerful clouds.

I didn't get the narrow land portion at first. It looked a bit out of place, but I viewed your photo several times and must say it really works. Such an amazing display of color and shapes framed by the "frightened" land below.
Great work

Wow! It looks like the cloud is going to swallow the sky... that or the Death Star is going to come shooting out of it... great capture and I know how you feel about getting photos at work. Sometimes everything aligns

P.S. nice title

That's one impressive cloud formation Stan. I think your capture portrays this well. Not sure if it lives up to the high composition standard of your other work, but I know that this was never your intention here.

Awesome shot Stan. I love the colour and you know just looking at it that the sh*t is about to hit the fan. We are entering the severe weather season here in Alberta and I will definitely have my camera with me 24/7. :toast:

Awesome Stan.
Reminds me of the sonnet by John Magee:

"Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings," etc............

Way to seize the moment.

Great shot! I really like the way the thin strip of silhouetted land anchors the composition. It really makes the fabulous cloud formation much more towering and impressive. Great way to keep an eye open and catch the unexpected shot!

Thought clouds can be amazingly interesting, it's rare that I find an interesting photo of them. This is an exception. The light on those clouds is great and you captured it perfectly. I think it's even better with the strip of land cropped out. It's not needed.
