Cascades Across Cultus

I found this shot the other day from the eastern shore of Cultus Lake in Central Oregon with the Cascade Mountains in the background. I liked the way the morning light illuminated the foreground rocks, and the rocks created a path out into the water. C&C welcome. Taken with the Canon 50D and Tamron 28-75 2.8.

Clayton, it seems to me you actually have two different photos in one image. I like the photo, but IMHO the foreground is a strong image w/o the mountains in the BG, and the mountains with lake in the FG can stand alone, together I think the two elements compete with each other. I like the play of the light and shadows on the rocks. Thanks for sharing.

John
Thank you very much for your insight. After looking at the image again from your perspective I think you are absolutely correct. I tried a horizontal crop of the bottom of the image and I think it stands up well on it's own. I think I will post it and see what others think.

Clayton,

This works really well considering the seemingly bright and nearly cloudless conditions. The dappled light and shadows on the foreground rocks make for a strong focal point. While I don't necessarily think the rocks and mountains are competing against each other, I do think that the big wide sky is a bit much. If you cropped at least 1/2 the sky the mountains actually become a nice backdrop and the rocks and shadows become more important.

Technically, this looks like it's suffering a bit from jpg compression you might consider rotating to correct the pseudo horizon of the lake shore. Also, and this is a matter of taste, but the sky is a little "too blue" or saturated to me. no biggie though.

Crop some of the sky and you have a nice comp and image.
