Last Light Lazuli

Lazuli Bunting. The background is naturally dark while he is in the last light that enters my yard in the evening. I applied a little selective brightening to his back. Only other post processing was unsharp masks. I like the way the shadowed background sets him off! Now I'm planning on some deliberate moving of various perches to see if on another evening I can duplicate this effort with a less heavy perch. I might have to go buy a potted tree to time this just right!

D200, 200-400 @400, about 75% of frame, f4.5 1/350, iso200

Suggestions and observations welcomed.

Lon: Very nice light on the bird. Really shows up in the larger version. Perch is OK, but sounds like your idea will produce a nicer image. The composition of this one feels cramped on the bottom and too much on the top.

What Keith said....and, love the color of that background. With such a great subject it would sure be worth doing whatever you can to get him to try out some other perches. :toast:

Hi Lon, I often skip these kind of pictures but this one caught my eye. I Actually like your "heavy" perch. Where you on a tripod or just a steady hand?

Well done

Onno, in response to your question, I almost always try to rely on some kind of support. Many large animals are captured with makeshift or actual beanbags or tripods from a hide. Birds, including this one, from a tripod.

fantastic light, Lon. perch is just fine for me, though I might bring down its brightness a little. I agree with Keith on the comp.

I have seen a Lazuli only occasionally. A few photos but none this good. I like the lighting and pose. I would like to see more of your photos of him. Even better, I would like to get some Lazuli photos of my own. Nice capture.

Lon,

The light is gorgeous and I don't think I'd change a thing about this image. As for the size of the perch, the bird decided to land on it so the size of it is just fine for me.
