Heaven and Earth

The ancient Greeks considered a rainbow to be a path linking the heavens and earth. Scientists consider a rainbow to be a meteorological phenomenon that causes a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the atmosphere. I just think they're pretty.

This is a double rainbow that formed at sunrise over a forest of dwarf lenga trees near Laguna Torre, Los Glaciares National Park, Patagonia, Argentina. To read more about my Patagonia adventures, check out Chapter One and Chapter Two of my Patagonia Photo Journal. Chapter Three will be coming soon!

Also, check out my newest online tutorial: How to Photograph Rainbows.

Next NPN online class Creating Wow! Images - Six Steps to Making Great Nature Photographs starts June 1st.

That has got to be one of the most vivid rainbows I've seen photographed. The lovely warm light and interesting composition don't hurt at all. Really enjoying your Patagonia work so far. Look forward to seeing more...

Awesome lighting. I like that the rainbow is a powerful and integral element in the composition.

Great tutorial BTW. I have always been reluctant to use a polarizer while shooting rainbows. Now I'm anxious to try it.

The bright mist behind the rainbow adds to the impact here...makes the whole image jump right off the screen. The rainbow is one of the brightest I recall seeing..beautiful

Wow, what a jaw dropping killer photo! :toast:

In some ways I wish the second "double" was not cut into, yet the image is still spectacular!

Great image, but to me the primary rainbow looks overly saturated and unnatural. Maybe a result of the polarizer?

Fantastic light Ian. This would be a great shot without the rainbow but with it, it is superb.

You are in the zone Ian!
Best rainbow shot of 2010 for me, it really rocks how it leads the eye from the lengas to the mountains!
Now... where is my jaw?

Killer rainbow!

Along with the Greeks & scientists, rainbows are also God's covenent after Noah's flood not to go through that again...
