Lone Sentinel

No, this wasn't shot during "magic hours." I was there and couldn't wait half a day for the light to change, so I decided to just shoot it.

This lone cottonwood tree was out in the Flint Hills west of Cottonwood Falls. I was in this exact spot less than a month ago and the ranchers were burning this pasture off. It's amazing how fast the pastures green up after the burn.

Canon Rebel XTI, tripod, polarizer
35-80 mm lens
ISO 100, F16 @ 1/30

This works well, Angela. I like how besides the tree, there are interesting element both in the foreground (rocks) and background (clouds). You're really manged the light well in this one.

Maybe not in the magic hours but it's light that more people can relate to. You composed the elements very well here and your main subject has some nice character. Well done.

But I have to ask ... 35 - 800 lens?

This is a beautiful shot and a nice scene. Beautiful and interesting shots doesn't always have to be taken during magic hour. You have some nice interesting elements in the foreground and a beautiful blue sky with some clouds.

Looks like one of those trade-offs. You can't get those clouds with that sky color during the magic hours, so it's good to appreciate this for its strengths. That's a cool cottonwood with "character," as my Dad would say.

Fantastic use of the light, Angela. There really is no such thing as bad light, huh? Honestly, I don't know that this photo would work during the "magic hours". The light would be too warm and the lovely green colors would be more yellowish-orange. This is great just as it is. Good stuff!

That tree has a lot of character. I like the mid-day shot you captured. A very nice spring image. :toast:

I agree with Brett's comment. W?O the midday light the pic would have a totally different mood. I like it as is.

Real nice comp Angela. Very well balanced from the foreground rocks to the tree in the mid ground and the clouds in the sky. Nice work.

Nothin' wrong with that. Just goes to reinforce the idea that good images can be captured at any given time of day, or night. Something I need to remember myself.

Very pretty Angela, "magic hour" or not. Looks pretty magical to me as is. Your composition is very good and well thought out, and the clouds bring a great added element to the scene.
