Nesting Chickadee
by Wayne Jones
This 2009 photo of a nesting black-capped chickadee is an example of some of the values of NPN to me. First, most NPN members appreciate photographs that illustrate wildlife behavior and habitat, as well as "formula" poses. Second, member comments are constructive, truly aimed at improving the skills of the photographer in shooting, processing, and presenting the best images we can make.
In this case, the warm afternoon Sun reflecting from a uniform light brown mat of last-year's leaves imparted a rich, orange glow to this scene. (Much more so than you can see here.) The birch bark is indeed sort of a pink-orange color, and the light intensified it. Several members suggested that it would look better with less of an orange color cast. I took the advice, and ended up with a better photograph without eliminating the true warm color of the scene.
