I stopped by the Sand Dunes in Colorado's San Luis valley over the weekend. I have a ways to go before I approach John Christopher's work, but I kind of like this one. I'm wondering if it would be better with less sky.

Tachihara 4x5
Nikon 200 M, somewhere around f/45 and maybe 1/2 second
Fuji Velvia 100F, full frame

Rich: there is so much dune photography out there that it's hard to get real excited about yet another dune image, but you've got something really awesome here. The light is superb, the sensual lines beautiful, the undulating dunes rhythmic, and the composition is just spot on. I wouldn't change a thing. This is working for me quite well! Good work!

Cool shot, Rich! Can't say I've seen a shot such as this from our dunes before, as far as what's going on here. The sand has a very soft feel to it and you have included the right amount of sky. It seems to have a slight blue cast, though.

Thanks for the compliments, guys. Sunday was my first attempt at dune photos. Darren, I'm not surprised that there's a color cast, even though I can't see it here at home. I guess I REALLY need to get a new monitor and calibrate it. But I'd rather buy film.

It may very well just be my eyes that need replacing, Rich! I'm not on a calibrated monitor, but like I said, it's slight. It's certainly fine as is.

First time shooting the dunes, eh? Not a bad start.

Very, very nice Rich!! Not too bad for your first try at the dunes. I absolutely love the double line near the edge of all the dune crests. Well seen, and glad you got out last weekend.

Awesome shot, Rich! One of the best GSDNPP shots I've seen.

I knew that I liked it, but didn't expect so many positive comments. Thanks!

Now that I'm looking at a better(??) monitor, this version does look much bluer than the original. There's now a color-corrected version of this photo in my portfolio.

Hey Rich:

I'll go ahead and add my "wow" to this growing list! You've got an amazing image here. I've been down there three times and have yet to get anything I like.

Fantastic work!

Hi Rich,
very fascinating image.

I'm wondering if it would be better with less sky.

Mayble you could crop 10-15 pixels from the top (in this web version), but I already like it very much.

I think most everything has already been said about this image, but will add that it's perfect as is. Even the clouds mirror the sand shapes. A real winner in my eye !

I am coming into this very late but I am glad I caught it. As someone else already mentioned the sky matches the dunes very well. I also like the fact that the horizon line is gently sloping to the right, which adds an interesting element to the composition.

I don't think less sky would improve this a bit. Excellent shot.

This has a sort of 'hyper-real' quality that is quite intriguing.
