Golden Pyramid Dunes

This is another of my favorites from my recent trip, and it keeps growing on me more and more. It was taken on another fairly stormy evening. I left the usual area in search of some piece and quiet away from the crowds, I had this entire section of the park all to myself. I explored all day and came across this spot and settled in to wait for sunset. For the second time on this trip, the light was much more interesting well before sunset, reminding me to keep an open mind about the "right" time to shoot.

This image was captured as the sun was just peaking through a hole in the clouds, it created this effect isolating the FG dunes from the rest of the scene.

This is a very beautiful dune image with wondeful textural areas both in and out of shadow. Even with the reflective quality of the sand that must be some remarkably soft colourful light that is striking it. I actually wonder if you need the band of light on the background rocks at the very top of the image at all, though I appreciate a crop would leave the dunes close to the edge of the frame.

Superb image, Zack. One of the best dune images I've seen. I especially like the delicate ripples visible in the foreground.

AWESOME!!!! I was browsing your website last night, and saw this. I thought it was just as good as the other one with the great sky. The golden light, and texture here more than make up for the abscence of that wonderful sky. I think this is definately one of the best dune shots i've seen, along with the other one.

Yep, that's a keeper. The ridge of the dunes entering bottom left is a great leading line. The lighting and warm tones are incredible. Ian's comment about the band of light at the top is interesting. It doesn't really add anything to the image, but it doesn't hurt it either. I think it might be a little cleaner with it cropped out, but its very minor IMO. Wonderful shot and thanks for sharing it. :jump:

Thanks for commenting, I appreciate the feedback. I see that cropping the top would simplify the image, but I still like it better with it included, it was an intentional comp choice, and it ties the image together for me.

Fantastic luminosity and composition. The dark band between the foreground and the lit distant mountains holds everything together beautifully. A great image, Zack!

Zack,
Wow. You are definitely on a roll. I really like this a lot. I especially like the ripples in the sand in the foreground. It adds depth and texture. The colors are superb. The leading line from the left takes you right into the texture of the rippled sand into the meat of the image. Looks like the top of some mocha latte whipped cream or something from a frostee freeze. As for the background I looked at the image without the lighted portion of the mountains in the background and I much prefer the image with them included. It falls a little bit flat without that light IMHO. Those hills add color, texture, light and depth. Wonderful shot Zack. Dave PS Looking forward to receiving my new prints from you this week.

Hi Zack, this is a really nice shot, and it presents some unique features than other sand dune shots. I especially like shape of sand dunes and the graduated changing texture of the sands from FG to BG.

Hi Zack

Nice comp with those curves all around, and the light is amazing

Have you the same photo without the upper mountains, I'll like to see it.

Best regards

You have captured some fantastic light here. I wish there was a bit of a softer color palette though. I feel like the yellows are too warm and a bit oversaturated, even for being in late afternoon light.
