Frost at the river bank

by Paolo De Faveri

Gallery: LandscapePosted April 8, 2010585 views33 comments
Taken a few minutes after sunrise on a very very cold morning at the Po River. Compression hurts so much here that I was almost about to give up and not post it. Please give a look at the larger version, which is much better... I hope

Details: Eos 50D, Canon EF 70-300, tripod. Stitch of 4 verticals.

Oh, this is lovely, especially the larger version. Living in Florida I've never seen a scene like this before - it's so delicate and fresh. Great job.

Fantastic image Paulo. The ice covered foliage looks so delicate. I also like the light on the tree trunks and the presence of the ducks.

The light splotches add a real sense of dimension that may otherwise not be seen without the ice. Great textures and colors, also Paolo.

Cool shot Paolo. I like the way the blue cast makes you feel the cold. I also like the comp with the water and the ducks in the LLC.

Congrats, Paolo--you dioscovered "Compression Hell"
This is real nice. As nice as the light on the tree on the rhs is, i still prefer a 4X5 vertical of the lhs here more--the balance feels better to me because the water/birds are such an important element here.
Beautiful shot!

Well seen and composed. I like the way you've brought out the microcontrast of the frosted branches and emphasized the color of the tree trunks.

I like it, great detail, nice handling of exposure. I might take a little of the blue cast down some, though.

The soft light works wonders on the frost here. Larger version definitely renders the details more effectively. I'm not sold on the composition, though. I feel the wedge of water is a bit disjointed compositionally from the rest of the image. An abstract focusing on the frost and trunks would be more effective IMO given these conditions.

Wow, great effect Paolo, it really brings out the detail in the branches. The trees provide some great anchors and the ducks is a special addition. Great job.

Sensational image, Paolo! Complete with ducklings, too. The frost is gorgeous, the detail extraordinary. Love the combination of colors that portray a cold that should melt away to an early Spring day. At least that's the feeling I get when looking at this. Love it!

Paolo,

Just stunning. The detail in a large print must be staggering. I love the highlights and the hint of warm light. The diagonal gives it a nice flow. I am unsure of the ducks though.

Paolo,
Absolutely gorgeous scene. How daring of you to shoot it as a 4-part stitch with the ducks swimming around!
