Great Horned Owl

I know that the BG isn't ideal, but I didn't have much time to position myself before this GHO flew off.

Beautiful day today, and when I got home from work I opened the deck doors to get some air moving. I was surprised to see this owl walking across the yard trying to scare up a mouse. I set up my stuff in the house and moved it to the deck as slowly as possible so that I wouldn't spook him. I was able to get a few photos that I like before he flew off to a tree in the woods.

Maybe not a prize winner, but I was happy to see him after hearing him all winter.

EOS 1D, 400 2.8, 2X extender, ISO 250, 1/640 @f8, tripod.
Comments and critiques are appreciated.

Thanks.

While the BG isn't ideal, it's not terrible by any means and it's a unique setting for a GHO

A very neat welcome home, Jerry. Nice light in the eyes and good detail. I kind of like the way he blends into the bg. :toast:

Considering the circumstances you described that's a good shot. I certainly wouldn't pass up a GHO because the BG wasn't perfect. You did well to get a shot before he flew.
