Sandhill Crane Tradition

by Wayne Rhodus

Gallery: AvianPosted March 21, 2010160 views15 comments
The annual sandhill crane migration is in full swing on the Platte river in central Nebraska. This image was made early this morning as the cranes lifted off their overnight roosts in the Platte bound for the surrounding fields. This is an annual spectacle not to be missed.

I can almost hear them Wayne. It's a beautiful scene with the sky color and the mass of birds on the island silhouetted so effectively against the lighter colored water.

Wayne,

Just looking at this makes me feel peaceful and I can hear the cranes in my head. Love the colors in the sky, the silhouetted cranes, the leafless trees and the mist rising off of the water.

A very appealing birdscape.

Wayne:
So very nice! The rising fog wisps, silhouetted standing cranes, golden slivers of water, and pink colors of the dawn sky as a backdrop for the birds in flight are all combined in this outstanding image. :toast:

Wayne, I just got back from seeing these amazing burds in SW Colorado. Beautiful color and seeing this makes me hear them all over again!

beautiful and evocative. I might go even more pano by taking a bit off the bottom.
