WB Nuthatch - question

I recently upgraded from a EOS 1D to a 7D, and have been trying to figure out how the camera is going to act in different situations.

I didn't get the head turn I wanted on this Nuthatch, but the photo is a good example of a few of the questions I have.

First, I'm amazed at the detail in the files. I'm also amazed at the size of the files!

Not sure if it's because of the mpx amount, but the blacks are really black and the whites seem to always be on the edge. I'm also not sure how the noise in the dark area looks. This was a contrasty shot because of the dark BG and the sun on the bird, shot at ISO 250. It looks a little noisy for 250, but then again, I'm not used to looking at large files like this and evaluating them.

Taken late in the day. Cloned out the 2nd catch light and a few droppings on the perch. Small crop.

Comments, critiques, and thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks

I don't see any noise worth mentioning. The detail is very good. The tone and color are excellent. I am not sure of the vertical crop, but I assume this is a vertical shot, so you really had little choice. Depending on your position, I think I would have tried for a looser comp.

Beautiful image, even without the optimum head turn, Jerry. I notice a fair amount of noise on my 7D at moderate iso settings when I zoom in all the way. The good thing is that my noise reduction software seems to like the 7D and I can just globally apply it without losing significant detail. :toast:

Very nice shot of this little bird. I especially like the cool looking very gnarly perch.

Great perch and detail. Noise doesn't look too bad to me and the bird is nice and sharp

Jerry

I'm not detecting any objectionable noise in this image, it looks a little soft in places, but your shutter speed was fairly low for a bird that acts hyperactive at times. I probably would have increased the ISO to get a fast shutter speed. Love the character of the perch.
