Coyote on the move

I got a number of decent clicks of this guy today, on the move right after a light snow shower. The conditions were full overcast. This was my favorite of the series because of leg position, but when I opened the raw files I felt disappointed because it was slightly softer than the others. However, when I processed it with one additional pass of selective unsharp mask it was improved immensely.

D200, 200-400 @380, F4.5, 1/350, iso 100, +1.0EV matrix, hand held, full frame. Minimally processed with slight curves adjustment and the unsharp masks.

Nice shot. I like the pose and the leg position and it looks plenty sharp to me. I also like the diagonal flow of the picture created by the slope and the positioning of the coyote in the frame.

Nice one Lon, looks plenty sharp to me now, your usm technique worked great. Like you I quite like the pose of the coyote and the position of the legs in this one. :wavey:

HI Lon,

I'm with you on the leg position - very nice aesthetically and, more importantly, it really helps add the feeling of trotting and motion to the image. I also agree with Robert on the slightly diagonal flow to the shot. To my eye, it looks like your focus was slightly BEHIND the subject - the grasses in the immediate background seem sharper than those in the immediate foreground. And you know me...if I have to chose between and in-focus foreground and an in-focus background, I'll always want to see an in-focus foreground! But, being fair, one has to look very closely at this image to notice this (and being a bit anal helps too!). I think 99% of viewers would never notice this (i.e., it hardly detracts from the image!).

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Brad

Love the trotting action you have captured. I think the subtle light worked well with this coyote image. Makes the grasses pop against the snow. He/she seems quite determined to get where they are going.

Very nice tone in this image Lon. I love the diagonal angle of this comp. It works very well IMO. Nice work!

An excellent coyote image Lon, nothing to add, only that to be sure about Brad's comment being correct I would need to see this larger  .

Nice shot of a coyote, I like the composition. it's hard to get close enough to photograph these guys as they are very wary. nice and sharp for overcast conditions

Lovely shot and I think you have manage to convey the motion through the leg position. Well done. :toast:

I really like the texture and color of his nice thick winter coat against the snow. Excellent leg position indicating moavement, the head up gaze and focused eyes are good too! Attractive coyote image. :toast:
