Lotus Flower

Gallery: FloraPosted February 20, 201080 views13 comments

This was taken in a village near Bangdung West Java, in Indonesia last week. The entire village was dedicated to producing herbs, flowers and trees for the landscape and gardening industry in Bangdung and Jakarta.
I had my Nikon d200 and macro gear with me, but wanted to try the
macro features on my Optio W80 pocket camera. I certainly didn't expect to see this kind of result...
I did edit this shot in LR3 and Elements 7 as I do most of my macro shots. I actually needed to tone it down a bit.

Comments are welcome.

Amazing shot with that pocket camera. I like the glowing colors and droplets. Perhaps just a wee-bit soft for my preference. Nice to see some reflected sky which helps reference the water and lily pads. Well done!

Well, that's a strikingly beautiful portrait. And with a pocket camera. I'm impressed.

Dave,

I might sharpen this a little but aside from that it's a beautiful image for my tastes. I'm actually not sure that I'd sharpen it. The sky adds interest for me and the color palette is very nice.

Just read a review of the optio. These point and shoots keep getting better and the macro possibilities sound impressive. The symmetry and color of the flower is incredible. Very nice presentation :toast:

Thanks for all the nice comments.
I bought the Optio W80 for it's video and underwater features, and also to use as a tool for my engineering work. It's handy when comunicating with the office or helping troubleshoot equipment in the field. It's much less bulky than my D200 and assorted lens..., and better than a camera phone.
I always take my Nikons along on my business trips as well, and normally use them whenever I get a chance. They are definately superior and can do much more.
This day I was using both.
One thing I've noticed about the W80 is that you need to select the right mode for the type of photo you're shooting. I've found the macro modes best for my taste. I haven't had a chance to try the UW feature yet... I live in Wisconsin and have mostly been traveling to cold climates since I bought this toy.
Happy shooting,

Dave

Hey Dave this is awesome. Seeing is the key. I kinda like it even better when I scroll it to a square crop. Just a thought.

Superb portrait of the lotus flower Dave. Color and lighting look great. Nice job of composing the shot. Also I'm reminded that although gear is important, the skill of the photographer is more important.

Gorgeous shot, Dave. I might crop a little off the top. That would still leave you that nice touch of sky. :toast: :toast:

Thanks again for all for the great comments.
I considered cropping carefully, and decided the folded lilly pads at the top added to the depth of the composition. If anything I might crop just a tad from the bottom. It's a personal preference I guess.
