Wetland Snowfall

by Wayne Jones

Another “sticky snow” picture from a little stream and wetland near my house. For me, it seems easier to make a composition from reflections than from the actual snow-covered vegetation.

I wanted to show you more detail, but since the larger version of vertical images can’t be much bigger than 720 pixels high without exceeding screen size, I posted a horizontal crop of this shot.

Canon 50D
Sigma 17-70mm. f/2.8
1/125 sec. @ f/4.5
Tripod; Mirror up w/2-sec. timer
Double-processed in ACR, and manually blended

It's pretty chaotic, but it works. Well done.

I love the sense of ordered chaos. The restricted palette works well, too.

Somehow, you've taken a rather plain subject and made it quite appealing. The reflection is wonderful.

A beautiful image certainly. Nice seeing Wayne.
The bottom half of the image (i.e. the reflection) would make a nice abstract image on its own too.

You gotta know I like it very much, and you have to wonder how many photographers would have overlooked this. Beautifully seen and presented Wayne. Take care.

Hi Wayne...I actually prefer the horizontal. It crops out some extraneous patterns from both top and bottom, placing more emphasis on the ring of snow around the grass tussock. I find that pattern quite interesting...regardless, you were able to see this in a pretty chaotic location...nice!

Well seen! I like the contrast in details captured here. I prefer the larger horizontal version because it minimizes the water rings in the LRC and places the emphasis on the snow and grasses.

Great Wayne. I love the ambiguity created with the upside down reflection. The muted colours (or absence of them) also focuses more the attention on the graphic design of the image. Well done!
