Cape Arago, Winter Fog

by Aaron Ellingsen

I haven't had a whole lot of time for photography lately, and when I have had the chance to get out, I've been striking out on good light and favorable weather. This is a rare one that has made it into the "keeper" pile.

This was taken a few weeks ago in the late afternoon, not far from my home on the Southern Oregon Coast.

Thanks for any comments or critiques.

B/W suits this. It definitely needs to be seen larger, and the technicals would help any in depth critique.

Jeeze, this is quite a keeper, Aaron. The fog bank gives the scene just the right amount of mystery. I like how it separates the water and sea stacks from the ominous sky and sweeping coastline in the distance. Did you bring the value of the sky down at all in photoshop or with a gnd?

Sorry, Phil. I don't do large versions. Just lazy, I guess.

Tech info:

50d(I hate it!)
12-24 @ 16mm
two frames blended for DR
one at f/13 .4 sec
one at f/13 1/10

Tyson, yes, but by manual blend. My grads are thrashed, so I don't use them much anymore.

I really like the fog in this...just transparent enough to show some detail but just thick enough to create a sense of mystery. Nicely presented with the composition and b&w

Lovely shot, great depth and atmosphere. I looked at a slight crop from the right and think it makes for a more balanced comp, especially how the foreground clump of veg plays off the midground trees.

Powerful atmosphere and a nice composition. Works very well in B&W. I can't tell for sure, but a slight CCW rotation might be appropriate.

Pretty darn impressive Aaron,
The cloaked mist barely revealing the rugged coastline below is just awesome. Great choice for b+w and Im a little curious what the color would look like. The patchy sky compliments the scene rathe nicely as well. I am loving the cluster of trees in the fg, really great comp.
Well executed.

Excellent comp with the curve of the beach leading from the foreground trees. The fog and light make for a magical shot. Very well done!

Others have said most of what I was thinking.
Hey, if you hit one out of the park like this once in a while, striking out sometimes is not so bad.
P.S. (Despite the drawbacks of the 50D that we have to work around, it beats what I was shooting 10 years ago, so I can't say say I hate it, but I'm not in love with it somethimes. I have mentioned to a few people that I would "consider" selling my 50D, but no takers so far.)

Very nice! usually these foggy ocean scenics have a softer, understated kind of impact. But the conversion makes this very graphic for me. I like the intensity here. The fog also adds a nice vail of mystery to the coastline below.

Nice, Mark. I get totally caught up in the curve here. It's really quite a complex scene nicely simplified by the soft light and from the sea mist.

Wow, this is sweet. This is one of the best B&W shots I've seen in a while.

The fog just makes this miraculous, what a dreamy landscape. The scraggily trees contrast so nicely with the serenity.

The mist is a really cool effect that allows the trees in the foreground not to have to compete with the rocks in the water. Still, getting to see through to the rocks in the water adds a lot of depth. I think black and white was a great choice.

wow, the fog really makes it mysterious! great b&w!
I stood right there watching whales with my kids a few years back - won't see any whales in that soup, I guess...
super shot.

Criminy, Aaron, you have an abundance of location, location, location! What a fantastic shot. Totally "coastal" in its mood and atmospheric for lack of words to explain why this image moves me so much. I love the way the fog dances with land and sea.

Very cool feeling to this shot. Love the mist and the arc of the shore bringing the attention around the shot. Looks great to me, and agree it should be bigger.. much bigger.

This inspires to do two things, Aaron. Go to the Southern Oregon Coast and
do some B & W. This is lovely.

I've been to this place, a number of times, but never in Winter. It looks very beautiful. Works well in black and white.
