A Light Winter's Jacket

Thanks very much for the comments on the previous image. This one is from the same day just a few short hours later. Jimmy and I had made a couple of stops along the way as it was still snowing and snowing pretty good before we ended up here in El Capitan Meadow. Suprisingly, it snowed just about an inch and that's exactly what was forecasted. When we had arrived here, the snow was beginning to tail off.

You may recognize this comp and grouping of trees. This is now the third in the seasonal series that I hope to complete this summer. I now have a winter, spring and autumn image of the same scene. Now all I need is the summer image which will be a first for me since I can't recall if I've ever been to Yosmite valley between June and September.

As usual, I would love to hear your honest comments and critiques.

4x5, 300mm Nikkor, F/22 @ 1/4s

Thanks!

Lon

I do remember this tree, Lon. The winter shot works as well as the other seasons. You definitely caught it in the right condition to make it look its best this time of year.

Fabulous. The barest hint of more in the background works wonders for the depth.

Very cool. I'm curious which of the 3 you like the most? I'm leaning towards the spring one being my favorite, and the winter one as a close second. :toast:

Just looked at spring and autumn to refresh my memory, and I believe it will make a beautiful series of seasonal shots, and would love to see the completed work hanging side by side. Beautiful work Lon. By the way, you were exactly right on your comment about my post, you do have an amazing memory.

Excellent in all details and well done composition. I enjoyed specially the larger view where the nice combination of white with small brown leaves can be seen. Very well done Lon. :toast:

This really rocks Lon. Very subtle, and it will make an awesome quatryptic (do you say that) with the other seasons versions...Lovely, as usual. Nothing new coming from you :)

What a great project! Each season with its own mood, subtleties, and delicate beauty. I can visualize the summer scene in vibrant greens being a great complement to the 3. Knowing nothing else about you, just seeing these compositions speaks volumes to the special connection you have with the place.

This will be a wonderful series. I just looked at the other two and it would be hard for me to pick just one. When you get the summer image all four together will be awsome! I like the winter shot alot.

Another great tree image, Lon. I like the textures, lines, and tonality here.
The lighter colored trees in the BG work nicely here for me. You could do
a wonderful gallery show, calendar, or portfolo entirely on your tree images.

The lines and detail here are amazing. And the idea for the series is really cool. I can't wait to see all 4 side by side in full size prints some day!

You know I like this one, Lon. It is a wonderful image. I like the right cropped a bit to really emphasize that middle white tree, but looks excellent as presented.

Go mid-week in early June. Anything later, make sure to get tickets for the zoo.

I think the comp is great and it is a very photogenic tree - definitely worthy of your 4-season project. I've always wanted to do something like this, and feel motivated to try it now.

Sweet. I really like the series you're putting together. I have one from here that morning as well, but refuse to post, as it's yours  Seriously, this is a killer image. The detail must be screaming out of the tranny. :toast:

Looked kinda familiar from the thumb..;-). Great to have such a seasonal series. Hard for me to decide my preference, but this winter version here is particularly elegant and appealing. There's an almost silver shimmer, yes, almost a bit of a monochrome feeling. That all simplifies and makes it subtle but strong in its communication. Beautiful work Lon!

Thanks for the comments! Yeah, I'm looking forward to completing the series.

Ben, you picked my favorites in order as I like them. Spring is my favorite too, although the winter version is catching up!

Absolutely delightful, Lon. It works well with the other 2 in the series and one from the summer season will complete the set. Of the 3 that you have now, I like this one the most. There is something about those snow laden branches...

Regards.

The natural chaos on this photo works like a well executed symphony. The textures and the volume on the large one are wonderful as well.

Full of beautiful, dense detail Lon. The little bits of leaf still hanging on some of the branches is amazing in all that snow. What a beauty.

Yes this is going to make a fantastic seasonal series. Obviously the spring image is fantastic. Sometimes all the elements just line up, and they definately did for that one. The comp is really engaging, and the spring leafing conditions are perfect for scene. The autumn version is also very nice. Hard to give it it's just due when being compared to the spring version. I think the autumn color is awesome, but also the amount of cover still on the tree kind of obscures some of the branch detail, and background. It's the difference between the two IMO. Now this image again, allows us to see the branch detail, and all the background, and surrounding stuff. The winter mood, and snowy highlites add a beautiful element to it as well. This comp also seems more like the spring version, that I thought was very strong also.

There's no nits at all about any of them. All very strong images in thier own right. If I had to choose, it would be Spring, Winter, and Autumn.
