Blue Sunday

This is from the sunday in October that the California Photographers got together on Nature Appreciation Day. The night before, we had the moon rise during the earth shadow into a sierra wave cloud. It was very nice to see. This night was prety cloudy, and I think due to the later moonrise, we had kind of forgotten about it. This is just after Steve Sieren Had sunk into the black sludge under the crust along the shore of Mono Lake!!! I was standing there with him, Mike Bohlander, and Lon. All of a sudden we noticed the moon appear from behind the cloud, and it all broke loose from there. Everyone refocusing thier attention on the sky. Lon uttered holy!@#$, or something like that, and then hey one of you guys give me a meter reading quick!!! it was fun times, and good memories for sure. Aside from maybe a little blue, this is pretty much how we saw it. Maybe the others can verify that, or not. A tiny bit of cloning in the moon's reflection to even out the light there, but that's it.There is a larger version included as well. I hope you enjoy it, and thank you for your thoughts.

Happy New Year to everyone here at NPN. I hope this is a great one for us all! it has been a tough start already. Maybe I will go into more detail about that a little later.

D200,
18-70mm,
10sec, F/6.7,
Thanks,
Chris

Happy New Year Chris. I really like the colors of this image, especially the blues and your processing looks superb. The sky looks totally noise free. The moon peaking out from behind the clouds adds a nice touch. My only small nit is the moon looks a tad overexposed - that's minor though. This is a wonderful image. Thanks for sharing. Michael

Wow, a full moon rise over Mono Lake- doesn't get better than that! Processing looks perfect to me. Great colors, mood and detail. Not sure about the tough start to the year, but I hope it's nothing too bad...

Wow, the larger version is stunning, especially with the way the rim-lighting on the cloud around the moon makes the whole photo feel crisp and super detailed. The image doesn't feel "typical" Mono Lake to me, and I think this might be my new favorite of the photos I've seen you share. Well done.

Lovely shot of the moon peeking out from behind the cloud. This shot I like because it has that peaceful easy feeling because of the full moon and the mostly calm water. Nice work Chris. Happy 2010!

Chris,

This is superb, especially the large version! Not only is the sky and moon gorgeous, but the detail and luminosity of tufa is amazing as well. The colors are right on and that's how I remembered it. My film version doesn't quite come close to this.

Of course what I don't remember is uttering any swear words. I never do that! But what Chris didn't mention is that I had collapsed my tripod and moved BEFORE the moon rose above the clouds! I don't remember who spotted the moon first, but we all scambled after that. All I had time for was to put my tripod back where it was and hope the focus hadn't changed with the 4x5 because I didn't have time to focus. I got one shot off. And guess what, the tufa are not sharp... Oh well.

But I'm sure happy for you Chris that you nailed this one! This is awesome!

I like this, Chris. Very dramatic light. Wonderful to have shared it with others when it was taken.

This is a darn good image Chris, love the spotlight blast of moonlight into the cloudy night sky. Feels like night to me. Guess I won't live that moment of sinking into the lake. I was pretending to be a new form of tufa in Mono Lake for a minute or two.

This is just plain gorgeous, Chris. Although I have never photographed Mono Lake at night, I have witnessed this type of scene many times while driving along Hwy 395 late at night (enroute to Bishop). You have captured the beauty of this setting perfectly.

Really nice work . . . nothing at all I would change here. It's wonderful to see a unique shot of Mono Lake.
