Egret in Flight

Hello everyone,
This is my first picture post. I'm here to learn; show no mercy! I shot this from an elevated platform at Gatorland in Orlando. I went with my young nephews, expecting the usual giant gators jumping for chickens and was amazed at the bird rookery!

I was using my K10D in jpeg.

Hi Larry, nice first post. The action works very well, the reflection and the POV too. One minor point: the leg cut at the bottom. I am not really convinced about the large frame.

Look forward at seeing more from you

I like it for the blurred wings and sharp head, denotes motion well. Good exposure. But I'd lessen the size of the frame as well. Would like to see this larger.

Hi and welcome
With a little digital enhancement you can fix the cut foot. I'd do away with a frame like that. It takes away any impact from the image. It is usually more favorable to have the bird flying towards you than away. Nice attempt, hope to see more myself. Only practice makes a difference.

Welcome Larry. I mostly agree with the comments so far. The head, neck, legs and tail look pretty sharp and the motion blur of the wings is a matter of taste but most folks are fine with it. Personally, I'd ditch the frame and post larger. The clipped toes could be dealt with if you have the inclination. For me, the fact that the bird is flying away from you is not a significant issue in this case since you still have a good look at the head and face.

Larry,

Welcome to NPN's Avian, a terrific place to learn, share techniques & images and grow as photographers.

I agree with the comments to lose the frame and about the leg being cut off, but I like the flight pose, the clouds reflected on the water and the way the egret is 'moving' across the frame. Would have liked to have seen this posted larger.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Welcome Larry. The consensus seems to be against the matte, however I really think it looks great. The color is conservative, understated and matches the image beautifully. I didn't realize you could post the 720 version in this manner - I'm here 4 years and just discovered this.... So, finally about the photo itself. I think this is a photo that has some niggling tech issues allready mentioned but it really works for me as a piece of art. The limited color scheme and low key feel are esthetically wonderful. That's my 2c, well done!!!

Great first post. I like it, including the mat. The blurred wingtips are just right.
