Atlantic Puffin

Atlantic puffin in flight bringing home the fish.
I took this on the Farne Islands in Northumberland, UK in June this year. They can be very difficult to catch just right, this is why I keep going to the Farnes to try to get these images of puffins.

I used the 2.8 setting for two reasons,

a, to get the background out of focus and

b, to get a really fast shutter speed

I am quite pleased with this one

What do you think

Canon 50D, Canon 300mm f2.8 lens, f2.8, 1/8000,sec ISO 320

Ron, a great looking bird and the fish are really a great addition. Very nice light. I like the fact that there is good light under the wings. I like the BG a lot and the way the bird is at the same angle as the ground and water. Very nice. In the larger image is it obvious to me the sharpest part of the bird is the left wing tip and not the body or the head. With a f/2.8 that left the body a bit soft, but not bad at all. Just pointing out what appeares to be the POF. At 1/8000s you really could have increased the f just a bit to give yourself a bit more DOF and still had plenty of SS to stop the bird cold. Overall a very nice flight shot of this puffin. Well done.

This is an interesting image. I like the action and behavior captured here. As stated I think that the image could be a bit soft, perhaps some selective sharpening might work. :wavey:

I'd be quite pleased with this one too! Good color throughout and the catch in the beak is very appealling. All the lines in this seem to point upward to the right. That might be just as it was, but I'm wondering if there is a ccw tilt to this? The blurry water in the lower bg seems like maybe it should be straight. The upward line of it doesn't actually bother my enjoyment of the shot, actually I quite like it. Just wondering if it is correct.

Magnificent color and a great capture of Puffin in flight. Not easy to get head/eye of BIF and f/2.8 is shallow as has been discussed. Keep at it, Ron, I'd be proud to call this mine.

Nice capture, Ron. Colors are really exceptionally beautiful. I understand why you like f/2.8. However, it is a pity to use a very low exposure time to freeze motion only to have some lack of focus because of DOF. My answer is to increase ISO and use a higher f value. Of course then we have noise to contend with! Anyway, regardless, it is a very fine capture. :toast:

Are these very fast flying ? Still I think a lil more DOF by compromising on the shutter speed would have been the ideal choice.

Nice one Ron - your background works well; enough to give perspective but nice and soft

cheers

The focus is good and the wing position is also just right! The soft background really makes your subject stand out and to me this works wonderfully. This is a beauty

The fact that the bird mirrors the angle of the background is definitely a plus. Great image Ron. The fish in the bill takes it over the top .
Your focus looks like it homed in on the Puffins left wing rather than the face though, just perfect locking-on the the head of the bird as its flying ( I know, easy for me to say right ) and you'll produce tons more great flight shots.
More DOF would have got more of him sharp , but I see what you were trying to achieve here.
I look forward to seeing more. :toast:

I would be very pleased with this one too. I've been to two places where I was able to photograph these birds (Maine and Iceland), but they were not actively feeding when I was there. I'm envious. I would really like to get a shot of the puffin flying and bringing the catch home.

Great shot with perfect composition, light and pose of the subject. Farne Islands are one of those places we would like to visit soon!!! Maybe next summer...

I agree on the DOF and POF points made here but I still like the shot a lot. The colors and the anchoring vegetation at the bottom appeal to me as do the fish trailing backwards in the wind.

Beautifully done, Ron! I really like the way the angle of flight matches the angle of vegetation in the BG.
