I had two cow elk come up behind me and did not know it. This bull was warning me off and I had to leave. Yellowstone and the Madison River.

Love the eye contact and surrounding grasses. Nice color as well. With that look, I'd be leaving too!!

It doesn't look like he wants to be your friend. I love the detail on the fur and the complimentary colors of the grasses. I might give him a little more room on the left and less on the right as well as a bit more on the bottom.

I love the look on this bulls face Jack. I agree with Sally about it being a bit too centered for this type of crop. I would also hope for a bit more room at the feet. The light and pose are very good and I think you can make this much better with a couple of small changes. Lots of potential with this shot!

Great shot Jack! Love the eye contact and the sheen on his legs. Great color, DOF and sharpness. Looks like he's all lathered up from defending his turf. I too would give him a bit more room at the feet and to the left of the photo. Those are minor though, everything else looks great.

I like the strength of the quartering to you pose. I agree with other comments about space. Perhaps if you simply cropped this to a 4x5 ratio removing more from the viewer's right, it would be an enhancement?

Thanks for the great comments everyone! I would love to have more room at the feet and to the left, but this elk was coming at me so fast that I didn't have time to adjust the fl. I snapped and ran!
This repost is a 4x6. Is it better?

Hi Jack,
Good technicals here - and it looks like you had a nice clean background to work with. I'm pretty in much full agreement (in the original post) with Kurt's comments. I do prefer the repost - to my eye it's a better composition. I noticed the crop on the bottom is the same - which makes me guess that there's no more room down there on the original. If this is the case, and if you have Photoshop CS4, it would be a simple matter to "slide" the bull slightly higher in the frame using Content Aware Scaling (but if you do this, you would have to select and protect the elk itself to prevent any distortion).
Cheers...thanks for sharing this...
