Head in the Clouds
by Wayne Jones
I’ve been away lately, so here’s one I shot in October on a cloudy day in the Adirondacks when the tamaracks were turning gold. I shot this as both a horizontal and a vertical, and ended up choosing the horizontal version because I felt that the mountain peak in the clouds should be the dominant subject, even though I love wetlands with the cattails, tamaracks and spires of black spruce. The larger version is a square crop from the vertical shot, showing more of the foreground marsh. Do you agree that the tighter, horizontal version is better?

This is a very popular spot, showing Whiteface Mountain behind Cherry Patch Pond, which is filling in with cattails in recent years. I kind of hate to see it go, but that's succession, as your post today illustrates well.
MICHAEL: Sorry you can't see the larger version without scrolling. Is you monitor set to it's highest (native) resolution and the browser window maximized? I made this 880 pixels high, and I guess it's a bit too large for monitors that are 1280 x 1024. I'll remember that next time.
