Tafoni

Tafoni sandstone formations on the California Coast. Despite their beauty and uniqueness, I've always found photographing these formations very difficult. For this shot I waited until after the sun had set, which always brings out their color that much more. Thanks for your thoughts

I think you did well with the comp here, in picking out a nice ordered pattern, and I like the play of light and shadows. The 2 almost black areas are distracting, though - can you pull any more detail out of these?

Looks like a tough place to compose, but I think you nailed it with almost everything pointing to the darker rock. I'm curious as well to see what it might look like a bit brighter in that area, but regardless great shot!

Thanks for the feedback Doug and Jeremy. Here's a version with the darker areas mentioned lighted a smidge, also added a tad bit more contrast

I agree, subjects like this can be VERY difficult to photograph effectively. I think you did a nice job here, especially with the added contrast on the repost.

Awesome abstract. The interplay between the light and dark tones really holds my interest. I prefer the second version.

Very nice. The off-centered comp is really working well here as are the colors. I think I like the first one a little better, but as an abstract, both work fine.

Really good abstract Greg. Does not look like after-sunset light to me, but anyway the light works very well here.

Prefer the darker first image but very cool abstract.

I like the first image better Greg. Wonderful texture, light, and color.

Both are nice but I think you loose a little something in the second. Can't really put my finger on it. Nice work.

Greg,

I think this is a fascinating nature abstract and I think you did very well in capturing the tough subject. I like the repost in terms of the added contrast and adjustments you made. I think this is a great capture from the coast.

Very lovely, Greg. As you probably know, I am drawn to such subject matter and I can therefore really appreciate what you have created here.
