Here's the second photo on this week's theme that I mentioned I wanted post.

This is one of the first images I ever took where I truly previsualized the resulting image. It rather marked a turning point in my photography so look fondly back upon it.

Also available in colour (I am fairly confident that I've settled on the B&W, but, I still keep the colour work-up kicking around – it is more surreal and less elegant).

I like the addition of the child in the first photograph - but this one speaks volumes as well. The composition is outstanding with the fallen tree and the "grave" leading to the new tree. Extremely well done. :toast:

I can see why you're fond of it. Nicely composed and processed. Even without seeing the color version I can't imagine it would be better than this. This just has the feel of a B&W all the way.

This scene was meant to be displayed in B&W- no question.

I really like this, Ian. A very striking image. The overall package is quite good, from the composition right down to the conversion, although I'm not quite making the connection to the theme of "Rebirth". Don't get me wrong, this is excellent, but I get a sense of death and mortality when viewing this long before I feel any emotions of hope or renewal.

A very interesting & appealing image Ian, I think the B & W treatment gives it great depth and impact.

Fabulous comp and perspective, Ian! I love the detail and monochrome here. Like Aaron, without explanation the idea of 'rebirth' doesnt come across strongly to me.

Interesting comments!

I had, once upon a time, titled this "Death and Resurrection in the Badlands" before deciding that was too didactic and also clunky. As such, I have always seen this image as depicting a circle/cycle or life with the fallen tree leading to the mature tree struggling against the arduous conditions of the badlands, which then leads to the young tree full of hope that is coming forward from the background.

Oh well, not everyone will see everything the same way.
