Sandhill Synchronicity

I recently returned from four days of shooting at Bosque del Apache with Dave Sparks. Weather was mild to warm in the afternoons, but hovering around freezing at sunrise. A bit early in the season as far as populations, but there were loads of snow geese and a fairly respectable number of Sandhills, also the fall colors were still very nice. Unfortunately on many occasions I had difficulty getting my AF to aquire sharp focus, mostly I think due to my inability to properly track the subjects. Surely Dave did much better than I did, and I look foward to some of his from the trip. My success rate for getting even acceptable BIF images was shamefully low, so it's obvious that I have lots to learn.

This was shot at one of the crane pools in early light on my third morning. I would have wished for a bit more separation between the wing tip and the feet of the lower bird, but overall I liked the overlap, and the image is pretty sharp compared to countless others I attempted.

Olympus E-3, ZD300 F2.8, Wimberley I, ISO200 0.0EV, 1/2500 f4, ~57% crop

Bill, I like the bird's positions and their positions relative to eachother. The light also is nice. I think the image would be more powerfull if the bird's were coming at the viewer versus flying away. Also, there is a lot of open space in this image that really does not add anything to the comp.

Bill, I like it, as is. Fabulous detail and synchronicity! Open space not a problem for me. :toast: :toast:

Sharpness looks great on this one Bill. I also like your exposure and particularly like the head shadow on the wing of the lower bird.

I hope you and Dave had a wonderful time down there and also hope to hear some stories from you both. Bet there's some good ones...

Oh good! You are back Bill!

I can't wait to see more of your images, hear the stories you have to tell and hear what you thought of Bosque.

I love the pose you captured of the sandhills, the tinge of pink still left in the sky, the warm colors of the cranes and theshadow of the head on the underside of the bottom bird's wings. I like the sharpness and how your exposure worked so well.

I always enjoy your work. Thanks for mentioning "countless" attempts. As a relative beginner, when we see others' work, sometimes we imagine that every one of their images is equally excellent and wonder why ours' aren't.

Hi Bill. Well, I have been waiting, wondering how your trip went. I wish that it had been more successful for you. I have found BIF photography very challenging, and you have done well with this one! Technically sound, and I really like the shadow on the birds wing, that is really neat!

Nice flight shot Bill, I'd crop a little off the bottom as it feels like a lot of empty space there. Did you try handholding your lens for bif? I handhold almost all the time when photographing bif. :toast:

I agree with Nate Bill. When shooting BIF ditch the tripod and hand hold. Most likely, you will get better results very quickly.

I think it's fine as posted, Bill. Nice to have these birds so synchronized in flight! Appreciate hearing of the struggle to obtain a shot like this too. [ I'm not familiar with the Olympus E-3. However, I note that the Canon 7D has a surprisingly large variety of options for AF tracking (none of which I have tried yet! The salesman was enthusiastic about them though.)] Lovely capture. :toast:
