Mount Churchill and Bona

by Doug Roane

Gallery: LandscapePosted October 31, 2009388 views27 comments
Last light on Mount Churchill (left) and Mount Bona (right), with Russell Glacier. Wrangell-St. Elias NP, AK.

Canon 5DMII. 16-35/2.8L @ 35 mm. ISO 200. f/16. 3 exposures blended manually.

C&C appreciated. I did decide to push the colors a bit on this one - probably too much for some folks. See LARGER VERSION for best detail

Very nice job on the blend Doug. I love the colors in this and how they seem to "pop". Very nice.

A friend of mine died descending Bona a few years ago, so it holds a rather strange place in my heart. (His body remains within the glacier that claimed him.) Your photo confirms his resting place to be one of utter beauty, befitting one of the nicest guys I ever knew.

This is another really good one from you.
Lots to look at here and I really like the contrast of the cool and fall colors. The ice almost seems to glow, sweet light.

Thanks for posting big.

Nice shot Doug.
Can't comment on the colour except to say it looks good to me.
I like the diagonals formed by the Glacier.

Sweet! Id love to climb Bona some day--care to join me? I love 99% of this--personally id tone down the sat or maybe brightness of the fg--IMO the show is the bg and the fg here is 'stealing' some of its thunder.

I just knew you'd say that about the sats and the fg, Stan! lol. IMO, without the strong fg, nobody would want to look deeper to see the show - foregrounds are where it's at man!
Climb Bona? I don't think so - I'll shoot it from the sky or below, thank you!

I turned down the sats -5. It might be hard to see without the images side-by-side. I think it would lose impact to turn it down any further.

Excellent shot and lighting. I like the contrast from the colors on the side of the hill to the ice flow then the mountain range. Well done.

I never had anything against the original saturation levels, but I don't think you have to worry that the "turned down" version is loosing any impact. It's still a spectacular scene in a great composition. Every time I think you must have run out of sweet Alaska photos by know, you go and post another like this.

One note, there's a lesser peak far to the right that is very unusually bright for being in shadow. I could be wrong, but it appears to have been blended as part of the wrong layer.

The blend, saturation, etc., all look great to me. I'd say it's a home run.

Good pick up, Ken. I noticed that after the fact, but wondered if anyone would pick up on it. Once you see it, stands out like a sore thumb. Thanks! Here is the 'corrected' version

Hey Doug,

Other than the unnamed peak to the right, which you corrected layer, the 1st version of this is awesome. I don' think the saturation is too much .. it's hotter than what I have on my version of this scene, but I like the way you handled it - I couldn't get it too like right with this much pop.

Todd, sorry to hear about your friend. I visit this area, so it'll add a little more to my trips knowing your friend is up there. Another fellow passed away in the area a little over a year ago, his body was only found this summer (of course, I might not have told Doug that before he came out with us). :)

Great shot Doug. What an evening, eh? I liked the light more the previous evening, but this comp is rocking.

Cheers

Carl
