Yeah, I know, Joe already posted a shot of this rainbow! Well, here it is again . . . in vertical format this time, with some different flowers in the foreground. Canon 5DII, Nikon 14-24mm lens.

This image is the lead image in my most recent Article here on NPN. I give it a bit of a beat down in the article so feel free to slam it here as well.

Beautiful shot Ian, the storm cloud w/double rainbow is awesome. Great foreground gives it nice depth, well done. I also wanted to say I read your article and really enjoyed it. You covered a lot of great information and illustrated it well with your images.

I LOVE this. Great balance, lots of depth, amazing light, amazing place and amazing everything. There is even space for copy at the top! Now, a magazine editor quickly! :) Great image with a lot of emotion. Cheers, Rafael.

Lol, i was just referring Domenico to your article for an explanation of why fg objects dont have to always be there. The difference is that, here, the flowers perfectly compliment the scene. Theyre not intrusive or distracting (a big clump of Indian paintbrush shoved up in my face might have been). You got some great conditions and you capitalized on the opportunity. Good work!

Wonderful image. But since you asked us to try to beat it down...

The only thing I can see is that I would like more interesting foliage/flowers in the immediate foreground. Those white things (can not remember what they are called) are not too interesting to me. Also the inner rainbow looks slightly bent or warped? Right where it transitions from bright to darker it appears to slightly take a sharper angle? Is it me? Is that natural?

Having said that, it looks great.

Oh wow, another rainbow image. Like I haven't seen one of those before. You think you could come up with something a little more original? I mean come on, how trite can you get? YAAWWWNNN.

Is that what you were looking for?

Ian,

Nothing to "beat down" here, this is a strong and beautiful image - oh, and the rainbow is a nice touch... :-) But since you asked, I feel safe in "inserting opinion here" :-) You may have touched on this in your article, I'm not sure, but to add to what you were trying to convey in your article, I would add that this particular image is successful because the foreground and upper half of the image (near/far comp) compliment each other rather than compete against each other. My pet peeve with near/far and must-have-a-foreground landscapes is that as a viewer, most of the time it's hard to tell what was important to the photographer, the foreground or the sky/clouds/mountains. In this case, the flowers aren't overpowering and allow the light and rainbow to take center stage. Hope that makes sense...

Lon, it is always safe for you to insert your opinion. Especially when your "beat down" is actually phrased as a compliment!

This one is all about the foreground. Even though the background is compelling this is all the flowers. And you captured that foreground perfectly. Very well done Ian, and I read your article - nice piece too!

Best,

Jose
