Third day, first snow

Hi , so here's one to portray the start of the blizzard. See the snow-flakes in the bottom left.

I guess this is stronger than the last one, but what about the intruding branches on the right? I have no objections to cloning, but wanted to know if you find this distracting?

Thanks for your comments!

Dietrich

Processing: raw-conversion, color-balance, TK's masks. Increased contrast in the shadows (that emphasized the snow)

Nice one! I think the branches on the right actually work well to fill the space

Very nice Didl, love the motion in the snow and the gb elements.

I do feel the branches on the bottom right are just a bit distracting, I would attempt to clone them out and see how it feels.

Diertrich,
I like how the branches facing the rain droplets. I wish that little branch in bottom right wasn't there..but all in all very very dramatic image.

I love the composition here Didl. Wonderful contrast of the foreground tree and driving snow.

Perfect shutter speed and exposure, Didl. The comp is very good, too. I would rather not have the branches on the llc, but it doesn't stop the effectiveness of this photo. Well done!

All is awesome with the strong diagonals of the falling snow... and the mood is great, I would make a version without the branches in the lower right. Darwin

This one works far better for me. The snow on the branches makes all the difference. I would clone the bottom right branch. I find it intrusive in the scene. This is very nicely done.

Beautiful atmosphere and color palate. I'm with Ian, the branches actually help fill that corner - otherwise the other branches and waterfalls would push my eyes out of that very corner, but that twig pushes them back in. Excellent!

That's more like it, Dietrich. Your skills are well used here. The dynamic of the water filling the background behind the calm steady branches was a clever way to compose the shot. The shutter worked great on the water as well as the snowflakes. No problem with the branch on the right, but somehow I with that nicely bowed bottom branch were fully included in the image. I say that without knowing what was below there of course. Great shot my friend.

Wow! I love the comp looking through the branches on the left, but could really do without the branches in the LRC.

Great idea and execution. Too bad you didn't have more of a dark BG so the snow would stand out. The branches are real minor and don't detract.

Dietrich,
Another great image! I would get rid of the branches in the bottom right as you mentioned. I think part of the appeal of this image is the way the detail of the left side fades off as the eye moves to the right... that branch takes from the experience in my opinion. Once that is gone, this is a real winner! You have a great eye for these type of shots!

Wonderful atmosphere you captured here, Dietrich! It puts right there in the action. As for composition, I don't find it particulary strong, mainly because of the branches you mention and even the white right top corner. I like how the branches of the tree are somehow reaching for the space in the right though. The snow accumulated on them is a key element in the photo for me. Don't get me wrong, you captured a special moment in your unique style, but I feel that the composition isn't at the same level as the other characteristics of the image. Nevertheless, I see it was a very rewarding trip for you!

Nice work Dietrich.
Loads of mood and the composition is good too.
The branches on the right don't bother me they may actually help to contain the image.

Awesome shot. I really like the composition. The flowing water behind the trees and the distant trees in the fog add alot of interest, complexity, and depth to the image for me. Love the snow on the branches and the capture of the falling snow, really nicely exposed. I think it would be better without the lrc branch.

Dietrich,

Now we're talkin' !! This is absolutely wonderful. The left half of the image is stunning, but the background right help complete the image - and for that, I don't mind the little branches in the lower right. Although a crop from the right would make for a wonderful alternate image.

Of course I wasn't there, but I'm guessing this particular comp wouldn't have worked under other, normal conditions as there would be too much competition between the background falls and the tree. But here, they are married beautifully. Oh, and I love the hint of color surrounding the falls in the background - yet another element that makes this image so beautiful.

This is gorgeous!

This is spectacular, Dietrich! I could take or leave the branches on the right. I think a crop from the right would work too, but it's certainly not necessary. Well done.

I've been looking at this for a bit, and like the cool tones of the image and the dusting of snow on the branches. I see that this was at the wide end of the lens, but my first impression is that I think that it could benefit from a little more room (a bit wider angle) for the RHS knowing full well that there might be more relatively bland sky in the URHC, I think it might give a bit more room for the "intruder" in the corner, and allow the whole comp a bit more open feel, just my thoughts, FWIW.

It's a beautiful image - actually a stunning image. Tough call on the branches to the right but I'd certainly be tempted to clone them out and see the result.

This is absolutely beautiful. Just the right amount of snow/fog to partially obscure the background. My favorite part is looking through the tree branches at the detail in falls. I would try to eliminate the branch in the LRC.

Way cool shot Didl! I love the crisp detail in the foreground and how the branches direct my eye towards the right, and then into the background. I feel (the more I look at this) that the branch at the lower right helps keep my eye in the image longer. I like that mystical area in the med to upper right, that branch seems to help guide me there. But it would be interesting to see it cloned out. All in all “Awesome Shot”!

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions! Thanks for your opinion on the branches. Good to hear that most of you like them.
I have a few alternative compositions, this was not a hard comp. to "see" and find, but then hard to frame because of the intruder and other elements. I wanted the tree on the left and the trees in the bg, and the branches on the bottom. It took me a few iterations until it was right. Thanks also for the cropping-suggestions.
Wider would have been possible with the other lens, but the snow was very wet at the beginning and I was worried about the camera. I did not want to expose it too much to the weather.
Thanks!

This is absolutely fantabulous! I love the light on the near branches, and the dusting of snow sticking to the top side of them. This is an all around great comp, of some real nice conditions. I'm probably for losing the branches, but it's not a big deal. Maybe a crop from the right to just eliminate the little branches there in the corner.

This is a beautiful photograph, Dietrich. In my opinion it doesn't matter if the little branch is there or not, it's still a beautiful photograph. If it was leaning the other way I might think about removing it, but it's energy is in keeping with the rest of the shot and sits nicely.

Outstanding, Didi. I like this very much as is, but would also make a version without the branches in the LRHC. I think it would improve the scene, but one never knows until it is attempted and completed to see how it actually comes out.

Fantastic work here, Dietrich. The gradual reduction in contrast as one moves from front to back is a very nice touch and its simply a joy to let my eyes discover the more sutble features being shown here. The falling snow too is just lovely.
