I hope a few of you are still planning to join our 'Fun Shop'! If you are, please e-mail me before Sunday, October 1 so that I can plan for you and also to let you know how you can find me.
I will be headed over to the East Side on Monday, October 2, and will be in the Lee Vining-Mono Lake area until the morning of Thursday, October 5, if any of you will be in that area. Let me know if you are: I'd love to link up.
I hope all is well with everyone and I hope to see you on the East Side!

Hi All,
When Anil and I were up in the Sierra a few days ago, we batted ideas around for a CANP gathering. What follows is the result of our deliberations while loafing around by the campfire...not only that, some folks, Paul B. for one, have been posting images of yellow/red/orange Aspen leaves; and that should make us hunger for the Sierra Fall! Here's the skinny...
Time: First full weekend in October…Thursday evening, 10/5 through Sunday morning, 10/8.
Place: Bishop Creek Region-Sierra East Side
Base Camp: 4-Jeffrey Campground on the South Fork of Bishop Creek.
Here are a few thoughts and ideas...
It would not be required that folks stay for the entire time, although that would be nice in order to maximize PAL.
Folks would be encouraged to bring prints for “show and tell”
All formats and skill-levels welcome.
We could ask subject-area specialists to give a short (and informal) campfire talk about their specialty in relation to the Sierra.
What I’m thinking is; a biologist (for example) would give a talk about Sierra fauna/flora or the ecosystem. Another example would be a geologist giving a talk about Sierra geology/geomorphology.
These folks would be identified in advance.
The more experienced photographers could lead a question and answer session about technique(s) to help the newer photographers succeed.
Participants would let us know in advance if they will be attending, just so that we know what kind of numbers to expect.
Folks would be encouraged to form small groups for shooting, and could go anywhere they wish.

I gave a lot of thought to the dates, based upon my experience with fall color in the Sierra. The color will be real nice at the middle elevations, but will likely be fading or gone, up higher. So, I fear to put off the gathering until later in the month.
We chose Bishop Creek because it is fairly centrally located in CA., has outstanding photo ops and is reasonably close to a larger town (Bishop).
As you can see, one of my goals here is to have a gathering that is both fun and educational…Let’s call it a “Funshop” (as opposed to Workshop). The nice thing about a "FunShop" is that there is no cost other than personal expenses and lodging/camping fees!
So, what do you think? Take a look at your calendar to see if there is a good possibility you can attend.
I mainly wanted to put this out for your consideration; so we needn't try to finalize anything at this point in time. Once I have a good idea of the level of participation, we can then generate a more definitive plan.
As I write this, I am getting stoked for fall in the Sierra! It would be wonderful to meet all of you and have some serious fun!
All the best to all of you, and thank you for your particpation at NPN/CANP!

I hope the trip works out so when I move back to CA I can participate in future gatherings hopefully.
I will try to make it. I leave for a business trip to Jackson Hole (yeah, tough to take) the Wed. after that weekend through the next Monday, so I am not sure I can pull it off. I will give it a try.
I will try my best to be there, to at least to meet everyone. I have no camping gear so I will need to stay in town. As I have mentioned to Preston, Reno, and few others I'm trying to break away from my job and start retirement. It looks like I might get stuck longer then I figured, but my full intent is to make this trip.
Hope to see all of you at that time. You will know me as soon as you see me; I look like an old shredded recap tire! ...........Paul Breitkreuz

Preston,
I am leading a workshop based in Lee vining and may get down to the Bishop area, but as of now I don't know. I'll be doing some shooting around McGee Creek, Convict Lake as well as the Minaret (sp?) area.
Are you going to be up that far at all?
Shoot me an email if you are

Thanks

Six weeks have passed since posting this thread Preston and I can say your date is looking like a good choice now with three weeks to go. A week ago I was seeing some aspen leaves in the highest groves turning yellow which is a bit delayed. Usually I've been hitting Bishop Creek areas like North Lake about a week earlier but this year I think your first week of October is about right. So I am going to try and make your group gathering however won't commit until near the end of the month. There is another group of mountain enthusiasts tentatively planning a fall leaf get to gether somewhere thereabouts too and I was also thinking of the 4-Jeffreys campground as the preferred camp to locate at because it is large and central between the two main canyons. Thus may nudge them there too. The 4-Jeffreys campground is $16 a night with a max of 2 cars per site. I seem to recall a crude dirt road along the South Fork paved road right where the campground entrance road is that one might park along and then move gear for camping into one of the campground spots. That way more than a couple of us might bunch up at those camp spots. I like your idea about the biologist and geologist though I'm moderately knowledgeable about such natural history already. ...David
Hi Everyone, just a heads up that I made reservations up in Bishop and found out they have a car show in town that weekend. Anyone making plans to stay in town might want to get a head start on a reservation.

Well, I will be up in the area from 10/4-10/6, but most likely be further up the 395 north of Mammoth for Fall color... I will however spend the entire afternoon Friday 10/6 in Bishop Canyon before I drive home after sunset...
Well, I am a Biologist...

A couple images below from Friday morning October 6 at Four Jeffries. RW left, Preston in back at the table, and Paul at right. Quite enjoyed Preston's warm fire RW and I enjoyed with him Thursday night as we discussed photography and much else. After coffee and hot chocolate for me, RW and I went on to work the North Lake area while Paul and Preston drove off up the South Lake road. Late morning afte RW and I had an interesting hike up to a secret pond, I parted driving north to Conway Summit. Snow thunderstorms raged there in the afternoon. A Bay Area friend drove up after work per a plan a bit after midnight after being the last person Caltrans let through Sonora Pass. The next couple days we worked that area which I expect will provide several excellent images. I'd been working the Eastern Sierra since Sunday October 1 managing to expose 65 Provia sheets during the week. Unfortunately my lab's E-6 process has been down frustrating my curiosity as to what's still in the film box. Hope the rest of you continued to have a fine time and expect there were more of us that showed up the following nights. Enjoyed meeting all three of you and hope to do so again. ...David
David: Interesting shots of life at 4-Jeffrey. It even looks cold! In fact, a partial bag of ice that wouldn;t fit in my cooler sat unmelted for three days at the base of a tree behind my tent!
I have sent my first batch of 4x5's (Astia and Velvia-100) and my MF film off to A&I. I should have them back by Thursday; then it will be time to burn up my scanner!

I'd like to be considered as one of the subject-area specialists. I have lots of experience with Sierra Barking Spiders and BSB Mosquitoes
