I've just started to try to do any real photo work in photoshop. I own CS1, and it would seem that I can't find a version of camera RAW that works with it. The one on the adobe site only works with CS2... does this mean that I'm going to have to upgrade to CS2 if I want to use my RAW files at all?? Or am I just an idiot?

There is this from the Adobe Camera Raw Forum FAQ:

Q: I have Photoshop 7, with Adobe Camera Raw 1; will there be an update to support the new cameras? What about Photoshop CS and Camera Raw 2.4?

A: Only the current version of Photoshop will receive ACR updates.
Note that when a new DNG converter is released, Camera Raw 2.4 in Photoshop CS will be able to open the DNG files converted from the raw files formats supported.

This seems to imply that you'd need to convert your RAW files to DNG first but that you will be able to use ACR in PS CS1.
There may be better alternatives. If someone here doesn't have one, try the Adobe Forums.

Jeff,

I'm not sure what platform you are using, but if you'd like to play around with your RAW files before shelling out dough for CS2, try the Beta3 build of Adobe Lightroom.

Yes, it is not a full program yet, and there are plenty of workflow issues that people have with the build. But it is free, and the develop module has some neat features to it. The one "problem" a few people have with it is that in order to export your image from Lightroom, it saves it as a TIFF.

Simply Google Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Labs and you'll find it. You'll want to check out the tutorial videos at the Adobe site and I'd recommend checking out the NAPP site http://www.photoshopuser.com/lightroom/index.html as well.

Cheers,
Alex

Adobe CS has Adobe Camera Raw built into it. The problem could be that your camera's RAW format is newer than CS. That is what I use for my 20D. CS goes up to ACR 2.4

You may need to check the Adobe website to see what models 2.4 supports.
