I need to buy a new flash for my Nikon D70, possibly the SB800, mostly for avian photography, and would appreciate some advice. Also, any advice for improving its performance with my Sigma 50-500 and Manfrotto 055PRO/141RC. Thank you already!

I would go for the SB800 just for the extra power seeing that some of your subjects are gonna be more then a few meters out and Im not exactly sure how the SB600 would do even with one of those flash extenders on it (hope thats what they are called, I dont do avian, can afford the lenses for it :frown: )

I can't compare it with the 600 or comment on it's function with the D70, but I can say that the 800 is the best strobe Nikon has ever produced. We have extensively used their succession of strobes since 1977 and professionally since 1991. We're using the 800 on the Nikon D2X amd Fuji S2, principally for fill in location shooting and for bounce indoors. Wow!

I use the SB-800 with BB for bird photography and it is well worth the money. A great flash!

I also have the SB-800 -- you won't regret it!
